Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
