The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
