Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Triggered the Controversy

The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in defense or defense capacities.

"Like us, you all made an vow to protect and uphold this national charter," the officials stated in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that violate the legal system or our founding principles."

Trump's Furious Response

The video message seemed to provoke a heated reaction from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional message, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a combined announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our nation with great patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the declaration continued.

Lawmakers' Firm Answer

The representatives who participated in the video also released a response.

"We are ex-military personnel and security experts who love this United States and made an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred duty."

"The significant point is that the president views it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "Every American must join forces and denounce the president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."

Additional Governmental Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."

He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this without delay and absolutely."

The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the government telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also reportedly told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and determine all that."

Administration Statement

During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."

"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the federal government who worked together to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."

She added: "The purity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically promoting."
