England to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will commence their Euro 2028 campaign at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they attain the anticipated entry for a tournament hosted across the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an Three Lions match since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the England side for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean beginning the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Rally
The championship was inaugurated at an event in central London on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were confronted as they arrived the site by around fifty activists, who called for Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Signs were raised with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The first match of the European Championship will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will feature the Dragons if they make it.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for European club finals from next season, will appeal to families and help engage a wider spectrum of viewers.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will participate in the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the standard process.
Venues and Playoffs
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches staged at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
