England's Assistant Coach Reveals The Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

Ten years back, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from the pitch to the sidelines commenced with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he built a standing for innovative drills and great man-management. His roles at clubs included top European clubs, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods involve player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. It’s our job to not only anticipate with developments but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We have to play an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured qualification with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect the best aspects from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to operate similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger to get better is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

The next manager with the club became Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
