Los Angeles Battles Record-Breaking Heat Only Days After Severe Winter Weather.
In the wake of heavy downpours that caused flooding across sections of the city, LA is now grappling with unseasonably high temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Setting Temperatures
On Friday midday, the temperature soared to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, per data from the National Weather Service. This easily surpasses the prior high for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established in 2025.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on official maps for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Authorities stated that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice featured:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a car.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat comes on the heels of a massive storm system that pummeled the area recently. That event delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, leading to evacuation orders for many residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead some relief will arrive. Readings were forecast to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in central Los Angeles by late Friday.
Other locales that hit ninety degrees were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Elsewhere, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the high 80s.
In the coming days, central Los Angeles can expect temperatures in the 80s, with cooler weather on tap for the week ahead.
