New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams revealed his intention to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to support Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams stated.
The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has drawn interest internationally and represented hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
In a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject the mayor's support if offered.
Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered reporters asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
