The people of Israel observe second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
People have come together around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Points in Talks
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Future administration of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No place feels like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will feel safe."
"Once we see all home again, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, sector and locality areas and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"When the evening falls, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my little child who places his head on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area said two more fatalities had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
