The Showrunner Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.

“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
