A comprehensive search and recovery operation is actively under way in the Caribbean region for two missing sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Rescue Operations Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of nine total crew members, as stated by a navy statement.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Context of Relief to the Nation

The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Earlier Aid Delivery

Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy tensions have been ramped up in recent months, with statements from various officials highlighting the complex nature of diplomatic ties.

In response to recent proposals, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to locate the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the people on board.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
