Venus Williams, 45, Receives Special Entry for First Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.
Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
Historic Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
