Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his trip to Washington that the Russian president's move to request talks with Donald Trump signals Moscow is feeling pressure. Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Moscow is scrambling to restart dialogue immediately after it hears about Tomahawks." This statement referred to earlier comments about supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine.

Political Developments and International Reactions

An ex- American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "Putin is trying to derail the progress toward greater sanctions on the Kremlin." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the likelihood of achieving a ceasefire by pushing Russia to get serious seem to have decreased."

The situation came after Trump had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Russia until the recent conversation with Putin, which the Kremlin described as "highly frank and trustful."

European Fuel Sanctions and Market Impact

The European Union have set a requirement for energy suppliers into the EU to prove their fuels are not made from Russian oil, as stated in a official guideline published on recently. This step is included in the EU's forthcoming ban on purchases of fuels made from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its latest sanctions package against Russia over its military actions in Ukraine.

Financial experts observed that trading patterns appeared to be considering the possible reduction of Indian imports of Russian oil. Several oil processors in India are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a phased decrease, as reported by sources familiar with the situation.

"This represents a favorable turn for the oil market as it would eliminate a major buyer of Russian crude," commented a market analyst, adding that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Military Developments and Energy Attacks

A massive Russian drone and missile assault targeted energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, causing disruptions in multiple regions. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia deployed numerous of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use every single day to strike at our power facilities," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noting that strikes affected the regions of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, central Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine and western Ukraine.

International Diplomatic Responses

Ukraine's envoy to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow demonstrated its true approach to negotiations through the "terror" of these attacks. "Russia once again opted for missiles over talks, making this attack into a direct blow to ongoing diplomatic initiatives," she said.

Meanwhile, the EU's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, announced that the European Union had no choice but to build up anti-drone defences against Russia. Kallas announced a "plan" to prepare for potential security challenges by the end of the decade, featuring a novel anti-drone system to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is expected to begin working in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. Brussels aims to obtain the support of EU leaders at a summit next week.
